Kids Invent in the Pearl City area

Grades K-6 (classes at Pearl City Elementary)

For grades K-2:

Students learn science by making toys. Each class is a different activity, different toy that relates to a concept of science. At the end of each class, the students get to take the toy they build home. The class activities will begin with

Pirate Ship
Design your own pirate ship. Does it have adequate sails for the wind? Are you ready to test it in water to see how it floats?
Jolly Roger Chain
Make a chain that you can use to identify your backpack or your set of keys.
Ship Attack Game
Attack your opponent’s ships and sink them to win the game. Don’t let your friend sink your ships first.
Secret Messages
Mark a spot on a map to hide your treasure in a secret way. Then write a secret and invisible message.
Sundial Directions
Use a sundial to hunt for buried treasure. Can you keep track of directions to get to the treasure?
Buccaneer Cart
Make a pirate cart, add wheels, and fill it with treasure.

and continue with many more activities.

For grades 3-6:

Robot fun. We will make a number of robots, some easy, some more diffficult. We will start with motorized car experimentation the first two days, then begin the first Monday of the program building an advanced race car robot. One the later robots will be a Sumo Robot.

In this class you learn to read diagrams as you build your robot. The diagrams show how the parts are interconnected. It is a skill to conceptualize diagrams and use them to create sophisticated machines.

You will also see what makes robots work. How does a motor operate in different ways? What are the gears for? You get to keep the robots you build.

Class dates: June 12-July 25

Total six weeks plus one day

Class times:

  • 12:45-1:45 PM daily (Grades K-2)
  • 1:45-2:45 PM daily (Grades 3-6)

We offer flexible dates for enrollment:

Students can attend the full session, or enroll for specific weeks. K-2 students can also attend MWF or TTH, for example. Grades 3-6 must enroll by week because students generally will be working on weekly projects and receive the robots they build.

The cost of the full program is $450.

By week, the cost is $75 (except the weeks beginning June 12 ($30) and beginning June 30 ($60). Each class is $15.

Kids Invent Toys™

Grades 4 and 5 (classes at Hongwanji Mission School):

Students become inventors at a toy factory. They learn how to brainstorm ideas for new toys, design the toys, build mock-ups, think about business plans and prepare marketing materials (web-based home pages). As they develop their toys, participants make presentations to the Toy Factory management (instructors), think through the price/cost structure for their toys, and work with other students in a variety of tasks.

The management reviews their conceptual designs, business plans and mock-ups. Because inventions are based on science and technology, we approach the creation and development of toy ideas through science and scientific experimentation. The class includes a number of toy invention activities to help stimulate students to come up with their own ideas. The aim of the class is to foster creative thinking, inventing and entrepreneurial enterprise.

Class dates: June 12-July 25

Class times: daily, in the morning (2 classes available)
