Kids Invent at Your School

How to start a Kids Invent program at your school

What is necessary to begin a program at a school?

  • Principal's approval to operate the program at the school
  • An available classroom, art room, or other room to hold the classes
  • Be able to distribute our flyers for the program to students at the school

How is the Kids Invent After School program funded?

Parents pay for their children to attend the program. We usually offer sessions of six classes, once a week, and the cost for the session is $90 ($15 an activity).

We sometimes have requests for one class at special events or for more classes in a series, such as for summer programs. The cost is always $15 per activity for each child.

The cost includes instruction and all materials. Each class, students build a toy that is based on a concept of science, such as gravity, force, motion, kinetic energy. The students learn at least one science word each class.

We want to expose students to the concepts of science and see how they work in constructing toys. Our aim is get students to enjoy science.

Parents can enroll their children into as many sessions as they would like. We usually fit five sessions of six classes in the school year.

This program is available for K-6, with the activities for the higher grades working with more complex toys. (See information on the robotics and other programs for grades 4-6 below.)

Can the school pay for the program instead of parents?

Yes. Some schools or organizations prefer to fund the program with grants or donations.

How long is each class?

Each class is 60 minutes. For a program for K-6 students, we usually divide the grades into two classes, teaching the K-3 grades the first hour and the 4-6 grades the following hour.

How many teachers are there for each class?

We normally have at least two teachers for each class. If the class is large, we add more teachers, because students need more personal attention for hands-on activities. For a class of 20 students we may have three or four instructors.

Is there a minimum enrollment to start the program?

We do not have a minimum enrollment to start a program. We will offer the program to see the response.

How are parents notified about the program?

Kids Invent will provide the school with flyers so each student can take one home to parents. The flyers explain the program and include a registration form. We will divide the flyers into classes, so it will be easy for the school to distribute.

Does the school handle registration and money?

No. Parents call Kids Invent directly to register their children and send checks for payment directly to Kids Invent. The school does not need to be involved with the registration nor collection of money.

Parents also contact Kids Invent directly for questions about the program, by phone or by email.

What other science programs does Kids Invent offer?

For grades 4-6, we also offer robotics programs. The aim of these programs are to help students build and understand robots.

The easy robotics class is $90 for six sessions, while the cost for the advanced robotics classes is $105. For either program, program, students get to keep the robots that they build.

See the section on classes for other programs.

How do parents know what was taught in the classes?

After each class, we provide students with class summaries to take home to parents. The summaries provide a brief explanation of the class activity and the science terms taught.

What if the school does not have spare rooms?

We are aware that classroom space is tight at many schools and expect to use a classroom or other room used for other classes during the day.

For our activities, we bring all tools (scissors, paper, markers, pencils, tape, etc.) and materials, and do not use those of other teachers. Our policy is to never allow students to use anything in the room other than our tools and materials and to leave the classroom clean and arranged in the same order we find it.

What if my school requires a different set-up than those you have mentioned?

We can work with a school or organization to customize the program to meet the needs of the students.
